Clogged expansion valves can cause all sorts of problems with an air conditioning system, from decreased cooling performance to a complete system failure. If your AC is acting up and you suspect the expansion valve is clogged, here’s how to unclog it.

How To Unclog Expansion Valve

Here are detailed directions on how to unclog expansion valve:

  1. Remove the expansion tank drain plug and allow the water to empty out.
  2. Remove the expansion tank cap and inspect the inside of it for debris or rust.
  3. Using a small screwdriver, remove the two screws that hold the top of the thermostat housing in place.
  4. Lift off the top of thermostat housing and then lift off the thermostat itself (it’s held in place by a spring clip).
  5. Inspect both sides of thermostat for debris or rust and clean if necessary.
  6. Reinstall top half of housing, thermostat, and screws to hold it down.
  7. Fill expansion tank back up with water, replace cap, and turn on water supply valve (make sure you have hot water turned on).  Allow it to run until you see bubbles coming out of expansion tank drain line (this will take several minutes). Turn off water supply valve once you see bubbles coming out of drain line and then check for leaks around all connections/gaskets on your system (if no leaks are found, test system by running a load).

What Is An Expansion Valve

An expansion valve is a type of valve that is used to control the flow of fluid in a system. The expansion valve is designed to open and close in response to changes in pressure, and can be used to regulate the flow of liquids or gases. Expansion valves are commonly used in refrigeration systems, and are responsible for controlling the amount of coolant that flows into the evaporator. The expansion valve is an essential component of a refrigeration system, and helps to ensure that the system runs smoothly and efficiently.

Can you clean a clogged expansion valve?

HVAC systems are notoriously finicky. One wrong move and you can end up with a costly repair bill. So, when something goes wrong, it’s important to know whether you can fix it yourself or if you need to call in a professional. A clogged expansion valve is one problem that you may be able to solve on your own. The expansion valve is responsible for regulating the flow of refrigerant in the system. If it becomes clogged, it can cause the system to overheat and shut down.

To clean a clogged expansion valve, you will need to access the evaporator coils. Once you have located the coils, use a brush or vac to remove any debris that may be blocking the valve. With the valve clear, the system should be able to function properly once again.

How do I know if my expansion valve is clogged?

The answer is not as complicated as you might think. One way to tell is if your car’s air conditioner isn’t blowing as cold as it used to. Another way to tell is if you hear a hissing noise coming from your air conditioner. This noise is usually an indication that your expansion valve is blocked and needs to be replaced. So, if you notice either of these things, it’s probably time to take your car in for a tune-up!

What happens when expansion valve is clogged?

If your expansion valve is clogged, you’ll likely notice a few things. First, your air conditioner will stop blowing cold air. Second, your electricity bill will go up because the AC has to work harder to cool your home. Third, your AC unit will make strange noises as it struggles to push air through the clogged expansion valve.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s time to call a professional for AC repair. Don’t wait until your unit completely breaks down – a clogged expansion valve is an easy fix that will save you time and money in the long run.
